A Fantastic Christian Movie

"The Second Chance" (2006) is a stellar Christian movie written and directed by Steve Taylor and starring Michael W. Smith.  The movie is about a "successful" Mega-Church that supports a sister inner city church.  There is much conflict between the different classes of people and everyone in the movie seemed to need to learn something about the real message of Jesus.

The movie was anything but "preachy".  Language and topics in the movie were somewhat salty, but conveyed the feel of the inner city very well.  The movie is PG-13 because of the language and references to drugs, gangs, prostitutes, and alcoholism.  Some violence is included, but generally hinted at off screen.

I have always loved the work of Steve Taylor.  He was at the forefront of making quality Contemporary Christian Music 20 years ago (yeah, he's that Steve Taylor.)  "Hero" is still one of my favorite songs all these years later.  I always believed that Steve's music was a call to the Church to live up to the expectations that Christ had for us in the world.  We are to be "salt" and "light".  I think this movie continues that same thread from Steve's heart in a new venue.

There was a great opportunity for this movie to really stink.  Steve's inexperience at movie directing is eclipsed only by Michael W. Smith's lack of acting experience, but they, with the rest of the spectacular cast and crew, pulled it off quite nicely.  I have watched many really bad movies in order to support the budding Christian movie industry, but this movie was a real treat.

Highly recommended!

The Federal Immigration Inaction Guarantee

While all sides of the illegal immigration debate posture and propose serious solutions, there is one major guarantee that no serious action will take place.  Until action is taken on this item, we can remain comfortably assured to no real action is imminent (or even contemplated.)  What is this guarantee of government inaction?  Stolen and other fraudulent Social Security numbers.

Our federal government knows where millions of illegals are working.  It is being reported to them continuously.  The government knows which employers account for the vast majority of the bogus withholding transactions.

Now, imagine for a moment if most of the criminals on the FBI's Most Wanted List were to send a letter to the FBI every two weeks with their real return address on the envelope.  If the FBI were to get those letters, file them away in a database, and do absolutely nothing else, you might come to the conclusion that they were not serious about capturing the criminals.  This is almost exactly what is happening with illegals.

Millions of illegals steal legitimate SSNs or simply make up one.  Employers do not have the resources to validate the legitimacy of all of the numbers, but the federal government cannot possibly miss the fact the bogus numbers are used.  When the government records Social Security payments and 5 people are using the same number (one guys in Chicago, IL and 4 chicken processors in Arkansas), they are forced to sort the payments and do their best to record the payments correctly for the American citizen in Chicago.   The money paid by the 4 chicken processors in Arkansas is free money to the government.

Whether a politician is conservative or liberal, ignore anything he promises to do about illegal immigration until he suggests handling all of the known cases of SSN fraud in the system.  Nothing is going to happen as long as no action is being taken to handle the people who tell the government, "I'm illegal and I am right here!" every two weeks.
