A Fantastic Christian Movie

"The Second Chance" (2006) is a stellar Christian movie written and directed by Steve Taylor and starring Michael W. Smith.  The movie is about a "successful" Mega-Church that supports a sister inner city church.  There is much conflict between the different classes of people and everyone in the movie seemed to need to learn something about the real message of Jesus.

The movie was anything but "preachy".  Language and topics in the movie were somewhat salty, but conveyed the feel of the inner city very well.  The movie is PG-13 because of the language and references to drugs, gangs, prostitutes, and alcoholism.  Some violence is included, but generally hinted at off screen.

I have always loved the work of Steve Taylor.  He was at the forefront of making quality Contemporary Christian Music 20 years ago (yeah, he's that Steve Taylor.)  "Hero" is still one of my favorite songs all these years later.  I always believed that Steve's music was a call to the Church to live up to the expectations that Christ had for us in the world.  We are to be "salt" and "light".  I think this movie continues that same thread from Steve's heart in a new venue.

There was a great opportunity for this movie to really stink.  Steve's inexperience at movie directing is eclipsed only by Michael W. Smith's lack of acting experience, but they, with the rest of the spectacular cast and crew, pulled it off quite nicely.  I have watched many really bad movies in order to support the budding Christian movie industry, but this movie was a real treat.

Highly recommended!
